What’s up, lovers? Did you hear that? Yup, it’s the leaf that just crunched beneath your foot. The sun is setting earlier, pumpkins and mums are starting to appear, and there’s a chill meeting you now as you head to school drop-off and start your commute.
It’s not just the foliage turning atop the trees outside, either. You’re feeling that hankering for, dare I say it, a partner. The Ravens start to play, and suddenly, you want someone to tailgate with. The sweaters come out of hibernation, and you feel the urge to clink mugs of cider with someone new at a fall farm.
You know what that means: it’s cuffing season—that cozy stretch of the year when single folks go on the hunt for new romantic match, typically for the short-term throughout the holiday party period. But, who knows when a long-term flame could potentially ignite.
If you spent the summer embracing single life—perhaps gallivanting with friends around outdoor concerts and street fests—you might feel a little rusty. But if you’re ready to start swiping and plan a local outing to get to know new faces this season (or you’re just looking for fresh ways to get out there and socialize) we’ve got you covered with the following fall and winter date ideas.
EAT
Plan a morning meetup at Sacré Sucré: Start the day on a sweet note with pastries, coffee, and a little something to share at this French-inspired bakery in Fells Point. (Order the macarons!) 933 Fell St.
Brunch with your boo at Limoncello: If you want to mix up the typical weekend brunch date, head to this Italian hotspot in Locust Point—whose mid-morning menu highlights a pizza Monte Cristo, chicken parm waffle, and tiramisu French toast. 900 E. Fort Ave.
Get together on your lunch break at a public market: A market setting lowers the pressure to pick the perfect spot, because you can both order from separate eateries depending on what you’re in the mood for. Hit up places like Cross Street, Broadway, Hollins, and Lexington markets for a leisurely lunch.
Share tapas at Bar Dali: Keep it casual with sharable small plates (think: crab and corn croquettes and excellent bravas potatoes), good conversation, and strong sippers at this subterranean hangout in Mt. Vernon. 909 N. Charles St.
Hang out at Mama Koko’s: For a low-key date that still feels like a treat, stop by Mama Koko’s, a Black-owned gem that serves craft cocktails and bites with a tight-knit neighborhood feel. 100 E. 23rd St.
Something blue…okay, not yet, but maybe check out happy hour at Nora Blú.: If you’re looking to add a little luxury to the date, grab a drink and ease into happy hour with Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and an upscale cocktail vibe at this new Mt. Vernon destination. 1225 Cathedral St.
Grab shucks at The Urban Oyster: Are you both Maryland foodies? Put on something cute head toward this flowered storefront on the Avenue in Hampden, where you can share a plate of oysters or an order of red snapper tacos in the gold-accented dining room. 914 W. 36th St.
Explore worldly eats at Bar Alice Anne: This newly revamped corner bar in Fells Point serves a menu inspired by its owners’ combined Korean and Irish heritage. Get the conversation going before digging into options such as umami-forward tater tots, Castelvetrano olives coated with kimchi, a Cubano-inspired toastie on Korean milk bread, and made-in-Ireland Tatyo cheese-and-onion crisps. 1900 Aliceanna St.
Take in the scenery at Cece’s Roland Park: Make your way uptown to lounge in the greenery-filled courtyard (complete with firepits that flicker throughout the fall) at this restaurant in Cross Keys. The wood-fired pizzas are perfect for sharing. 10 Village Square.
Treat yourself at Cookhouse: For a classic dinner date, make a reservation to enjoy seasonal specialties (such as truffle funghi risotto and a pork chop with parsnip-apple puree) at Cookhouse. Bolton Hill is the perfect neighborhood to take an after-dinner stroll and walk your date to their car. 1501 Bolton St.
DRINK
Sip matcha or chai at Equitea: Grab an expertly made pick-me-up at this low-key matcha studio in Remington, which is open until 3 or 4 p.m. if you’re planning an afternoon date. Tell Quentin I sent ya. 311 W. 28th St.
Slurp smoothies at MoreLife: They’ve got board games, cards, and classes in the shop, so you can do an activity while learning more about one another. 241 W. Chase St.
Grab drinks at Mount Royal Tavern: Keep it classic at one of Baltimore’s most beloved dive bars. Grab some booze to settle your nerves, sit at a high-top, gaze at the Sistine Chapel-replica ceiling above, and let the night unfold. 1204 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
Crack a Boh at Charles Village Pub: This decades-old neighborhood fixture is perfect for when you want to keep it unfussy, and very Baltimore. Plan a date to catch a game over a Natty Boh and a basket of nachos. 3107 St. Paul St.
Let the decor spark the conversation at Werewolves Welcome: Just in time for spooky season, Old Goucher has welcomed a dimly lit haunt with a one-of-a-kind interior—including mirrored bar tables and a staircase that evokes Alice in Wonderland. Order a drink at the bar (or a hot dog from the vintage steamer) and take it all in together. 17 W. 24th St.
Sit at the bar at Nine Tailed Fox: Though known for its Chinese dishes, this sleek spot in Cross Keys also offers a romantic atmosphere for drinks. Among the offerings are the rum and midori-infused Way of the Dragon and N/A Singing Spring made with yuzu and white tea. 3 Village Square.
Sip tiki-inspired drinks at Pink Flamingo: The cold weather might be creeping in, but the tropical vibes are on high year-round at this Remington cocktail bar that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Order a pair of tiki-inspired cocktails (we love the rum-forward Whirlybird and tequila-infused Fire Island) and talk about your favorite travel destinations. 300 W. 30th St.
Soak in the vintage vibes at NEATFREAK!: At this new Fells Point watering hole, you can tip back the signature martinis while playing I-Spy with the collection of antiques, old instruments, glassware, and more than 3,000 records on display. 1822 Fleet St.
DO
Head to a pumpkin patch: Browse our full guide, here, to find the fall farm that’s the most convenient meeting spot for you both. Then, lose track of time as you pick pumpkins, hop on a hayride, navigate a corn maze, and scope out scratch-made treats.
Order apple cider slushies for two: An array of area orchards (browse our full guide here) are ready and waiting to serve crisp fall cider—whether you prefer yours cold, hot, boozy, slushified, or baked into a warm donut—throughout the season.
Gear up for game day: If you ask us, game days are a great test of compatibility. You get to see how your potential match handles pressure, and—hopefully—how hard they rep our city. If you don’t have home game tickets, don’t sweat it. You can still head toward The Bank and get in on the action at a tailgate (check out Bmore Around Town and the TailGOAT) or by posting up at a taproom like Checkerspot, M8, or Pickett in the South Baltimore Brewery District.
Take a stroll, either around a local park or with a neighborhood run club: Neighborhood Runners and Block Blazers are worth checking out if you want to meet up in a group setting first. For a one-on-one date, nothing says romance like a walk around Patterson, Druid Hill, Latrobe, Federal Hill, Riverside, Clifton, or any of our other picturesque city parks on a crisp day.
Catch a film at The Parkway, The Senator, or The Charles: Sometimes the perfect date is as simple as an old-school theater, a good flick, and someone you actually want to share your popcorn with.
Run it back to the Blockbuster days at Beyond Video: If you’d rather watch a movie at home, pick out a title together the old-fashioned way at this old-school video store in Remington. 2545 N. Howard St.
Raid the racks at a flea market: Check out recurring vintage markets like Bmore Flea and Vintagepalooza to get to know each other’s style.
Explore a local museum: As (oftentimes free) retreats from the cold or extreme heat, museums are ideal indoor date spots. For what’s new at institutions like the Baltimore Museum of Art, Walters Art Museum, Reginald F. Lewis Museum, American Visionary Art Museum, and Great Blacks in Wax Museum, see our fall arts preview, here.
Browse a bookshop: Consult our full guide to locally owned bookstores, and then browse the shelves together and pick out a book for each other. Bonus points if you visit a shop specifically geared toward the romance genre, like Sweet Nothings in Overlea, La Petit Mort in Cockeysville, or the forthcoming Bmore Romantic in Federal Hill.
